In Ayurveda, the five sense organs are known as the vital gateways of the human body when it comes to experiencing the outer world. The skin is regarded as an organ of touch and is one of the most important sense organs. Monsoon nourishes every living being on earth, but it also brings some serious problems with it. According to Ayurveda, the rainy season (Varsha Ritu) is also the time for aggravation of Vata and Pitta, which are primarily responsible for the metabolism and digestion of food in the body. Digestion is usually weak during the rainy season as water and food, if not properly stored, can get contaminated and affect one’s health. Because of that health conditions like hyperacidity, indigestion, skin disorders (boils, eczema, and rashes), hair loss, and infections are common in this season. According to Ayurveda, skin disorders or ailments are caused due to imbalance in all the three doshas, in which the primary dosha involved is pitta dosha. During rainy, your skin tends to lose the ability to retain moisture due to assimilated pitta and becomes highly dry, itchy and blistered.
Monsoon is the time when skin tends to become dry due to dehydration as a lot of water content is lost thanks to excessive sweating. Drink at least 7-8 glasses of water to avoid dehydration and keep your skin free from flaky dryness. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking healthy juices such as beetroot, carrot, cucumber, wheatgrass, gourd, mint, and lemon juice.
This will help you to not just keep your body hydrated but also to flush out all the toxins. A well-hydrated body is less prone to skin problems as toxins no longer have a chance to accumulate.
Avoid Excess Consumption of Acidic Foods
In Ayurveda, though skin diseases are caused due to imbalances in all the three doshas, the prime dosha involved is Pitta. Pitta symbolizes heat or fire. Acidic foods like tomatoes, citrus fruits, yoghurt, and vinegar should be avoided. Also, fermented food, salty and spicy foods aggravate Pitta in the body. Increased consumption of such foods vitiates Pitta dosha and that leads to inflammatory skin conditions like acne, pimple, itching, boils, and eczema.
Fungal and bacterial infections are more prevalent in the rainy season due to dampness and moisture on the skin. A herbal massage oil containing extracts of neem, turmeric, sariva would be really helpful in getting rid of such infection and improving skin texture. Apply these oils before the bath.
Make herbs that have cooling effects on the body, a part of your diet and skincare. Pitta pacifying herbs such as mint, fennel, coriander seeds, Indian gooseberry (Amla), Manjistha, Aloe vera, and Triphala are best for glowing skin in monsoon. These herbs help in boosting immunity and detoxifying your body.
Take mild laxatives: A clean bowel movement is imperative for healthy skin. Taking mild laxatives such as Triphala powder or other natural laxatives such as prunes, figs and raisins is beneficial if you don’t have clean bowel movements. A teaspoonful of Triphala powder can be taken at bedtime every night, with warm water or milk.
Keep dry: It is important to always keep your skin folds and feet dry and clean. Damp skin is a breeding ground for fungal infections. Using these Ayurvedic treatments and skin remedies will help you get back to glowing and flawless skin. Skincare herbs like Turmeric, Aloe Vera, Manjistha, Sandalwood, and Neem remove skin blemishes and also exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin.
