SAMPLE DIET PLAN FOR KIDNEY DISORDERS
- Kidneys are a vital pair of organs in the abdomen. They play a crucial role in removing waste and excess water from the blood, which is expelled as urine. Additionally, kidneys maintain the balance of essential chemicals such as sodium, potassium, and calcium in the body. Moreover, they produce hormones that regulate blood pressure and stimulate the bone marrow to generate red blood cells.
- When we eat or drink, our bodies absorb essential nutrients for energy, while the excess residue is transported by the blood to our kidneys. Here, the kidneys filter out these nutrients and convert them into urine. However, in cases of kidney disease, certain nutrients can be harmful to the kidneys. Therefore, adhering to a renal diet is crucial to safeguard the body from such damage.
- This sample diet, which is low in sodium, phosphorus, and protein, aims to support kidney function and delay progression to complete kidney disease.
- Persons with any kind of kidney disease should consume high quality protein while potentially limiting intake of potassium and calcium.
