National Turmeric Board Launched to Boost India’s Turmeric Sector

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry has established the National Turmeric Board (NTB) with its headquarters
in Nizamabad, Telangana, to enhance turmeric cultivation, production, processing, and marketing. This makes
turmeric the sixth commodity to have a dedicated board after tea, coffee, rubber, spices, and tobacco.
The NTB will focus on farmer welfare across 20 states, research, product innovation, and promoting turmeric’s
medicinal benefits globally. India, the world’s largest producer and exporter of turmeric, accounted for 75%
of global production and 62% of exports in 2022-23.
Key turmeric-producing states include Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, with GI-tagged
varieties like Lakadong (Meghalaya), Kandhamal (Odisha), Erode (Tamil Nadu), and Armoor (Telangana).
With turmeric exports valued at USD 207.45 million, major buyers include Bangladesh, UAE, the US, and
Malaysia. Turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
properties, making it a key ingredient in health and wellness industries.
