In India, Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is significantly more prevalent than Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD). The prevalence of fatty liver, specifically Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), in India is estimated to be around 38% of the adult population. This means that roughly 38 out of every 100 adults in India are likely to have some degree of NAFLD. What’s fatty liver? Is this fatal? is it incurable? Is it only occurring to who drinks alcohol daily? etc. Questions we asked to our doctors frequently so here short understanding of this disease.
Brief Introduction of Disease:
Liver is second largest organ and important organ in our body. it regulates so many functions in our body like metabolism, synthesis of nutrients, Blood purifications, temperature regulation, bile production etc. Fatty liver occurs when too much fluid buildup in the liver cell. And impairing its functions lead to severe complications. Fatty liver occurs in the patients who drink a lot of alcohol and also occurs in who doesn’t drink alcohol because use of alcohol is one of the causes but there are also like metabolic, Nutritional, HIV, Hepatitis etc.
Understanding Fatty liver through Ayurveda:
In Ayurveda, the liver is referred to as Yakrit, and Yakrit(Liver) plays a vital role in the process of digestion and blood purification. Fatty liver is primarily considered a result of Agni Mandya(weak digestive fire), Ama (Toxic undigested substances) and an imbalance in Kapha and Pitta doshas
Acc to ayurveda causes of Fatty liver are Excessive intake of Fatty, fried, processed and incompatible foods, coupled with a sedentary lifestyle, disrupts the liver’s functions and leads to the accumulation of toxins and fat. Ayurveda focus on detoxification, strengthening, digestion, balancing doshas, and rejuvenating liver function.
Ayurvedic Diet for Fatty liver:
Diet plays a crucial role in reversing fatty liver because food is medicine. Acc to Ayurveda food should be Light, dosha-balancing, especially for Kapha and Pitta and easily digestible.
Food to Include:
- Green leafy Vegetables: Spinach, Fenugreek, bottle gourd, and bitter gourd are excellent for detoxification and balancing Pitta.
- Whole Grains: Brown rice, Barley and millets like Kodo and barnyard millet support liver health and digestion.
- Turmeric – Known for its anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties. Use it in cooking or as turmeric milk (with low fat milk or plant-based milk)

- Warm water and Herbal tea – Drinking warm water through out day enhance agni. Herbal tea with ginger or cinnamon improves digestion.
- Beetroot and carrot – These improve liver detoxification and promote bile flow.
Food to Avoid:
- Deep-fried foods and high fat dairy
- Red meat and processed foods
- Excess sugar, white flour and carbonated drinks
- Alcohol and tobacco
- Leftover and cold/reheated food

Ayurvedic Herbs for Fatty liver:
