With every passing year, our heart does more than just pump blood – it carries our emotions, memories, and the wisdom of a lifetime.
In Ayurveda, the Hridaya (heart) is not only a physical organ but the very seat of Ojas, the subtle essence that sustains vitality, immunity, and joy. As we age, the heart deserves gentler care -foods that are nourishing yet light, strengthening yet soothing, protective yet pleasing to the senses.
Padma (lotus seeds) are described in Nighantus as “Hridya” (good for the heart), “Rasayana” (rejuvenative), and “Balya” (strength-promoting).
Ingredients –
(Serves 2–3)
Lotus seeds (Makhana) – 1 cup (roasted)
Cow’s milk – 2 cups
Cow’s ghee – 1 tbsp
Sarkara/ Dates – 3–4 tbsp (adjust to taste)
Cardamom powder – ¼ tsp
Almond – 1 tbsp
Method of Preparation-
- Lightly roast lotus seeds in ghee until crisp. Crush coarsely.
- Boil milk in a pan, reduce on low flame until slightly thickened.
- Add roasted lotus seeds and cook for 8–10 minutes.
- Sweetened with sarkara ( sugar candy ) / Dates .
- Sprinkle cardamom powder and garnish with nuts. Serve warm.
Benefits of the Ingredient
Lotus Seeds (Makhana)
- Makhana or Padma-bija are Madhura rasa (sweet), guru (nourishing), and balya (strength-promoting).
- They pacify Vata and Pitta, strengthen the heart (Hridya), improve vitality (Ojas vardhak), and support longevity.
- It is rich in magnesium and potassium, which regulate blood pressure.
- They are low in sodium which makes them ideal for heart patients.
- Their antioxidants (kaempferol, flavonoids) reduce oxidative stress on cardiac tissue.
Cow’s Milk
- It is ojovardhak and satvic .
- It has rasayan.
- It deeply nourishes tissues (Dhatu poshak), strengthens the heart, and calms the mind.
- When taken warm and in moderation, it is Hridya (cardio-supportive).

Cow’s Ghee
- It is Amrita-sadrush (like nectar).
- It enhances Agni without aggravating Pitta, nourishes the heart and brain, and improves memory and immunity.
- It also lubricates the body and protects Srotas (channels).
- It contains healthy short- and medium-chain fatty acids, along with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which may reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and improve good cholesterol (HDL).
Sarkara / Dates
- Dates (Kharjura) are Madhura rasa, Sheeta virya, and Hridya. They instantly replenish energy, improve blood quality (Rakta vardhak), and nourish Ojas, which is essential for heart vitality.
- It has dietary fiber for cholesterol control.
- potassium and magnesium that regulate blood pressure and strengthen cardiac function.
Cardamom Powder
- It is known as Ela, it is Hridya.
- It is deepana (enhances digestion), and Tridosha-hara.
- It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and vasodilatory effects. It helps regulate blood pressure and improves respiratory and digestive function.
Almond
- Almonds are Balya, Medhya (memory-enhancing), and Hridya which strengthen nerves and the heart.
- It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, and antioxidants.
- They lower LDL cholesterol, improve arterial flexibility, and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
