According to Ayurveda Infertility primary refers to the biological inability of a woman of reproductive age to contribute to conception and also the state of a woman who is unable to carry pregnancy to the full term. Infertility is also defined as the failure to conceive after a year of regular intercourse without contraception according to modern science.
Panchkarma treatment is one of the leading Ayurvedic treatment procedures in the infertility. It includes 5 stages of treatment as follows:
1. Vaman (Emesis)
2. Virechan( Purgation)
3. Niruha Basti ( Decoction Enema)
4. Anuvasana Basti (Oil Enema)
5. Nasya (Insertion of Medicine through Nostril).
Among those Niruha Basti is like nectar to an infertile woman.
Panchkarma treatment not only treats female infertility but it also treats male infertility.
Panchkarma treatment is divided into 3 parts:
• Purvakarma [include langhan, Snehan and Swedan]
• Pradhankarma [include Virechan, Basti (Anuvasan and Niruha Basti) and Nasya]
• Pachyatkarma [include Samsarjan Krama (Dietary regimen to be follow after treatment)]
Some specific treatment also should be given i.e., for women Uttarbasti (Drug inserted through vaginal route) should be given while for male, Shukrashodhan and Shukravardhan Auashadha should be given.
Uttarbasti contributes a very important role in treating infertility because it has direct local action in reproductive system. It also helps to increase receptivity of genital track for entry of sperm. Ovarian contain the receptors which receive hormone secreted by hypothalamus and pituitary gland. The drug stimulates those receptors so that proper ovulation occurs in each cycle. Uttarbasti relieves tubal blockage by lysis of adhesion and relieves obstruction. Reproductive system present in katisthan which is sthan/place of Apan vayu. Action of basti is predominantly on vata dosha and pakvashya. Garbhashya is made of Vayu and Akash Mahabhuta. Since Basti is targeted at regulating the apan vayu, it facilitates timely release of ovum and also good reproduction of sperm.
Virechan acts on pitta dosha. It removes the obstructed kapha dosha. Vata dosha that is obstructed by kapha dosha also gets cleared by Virechan. Virechan remove the toxins from the body and regulate the menstruation. It helps to eliminate Ama thus corrects Agni. Healthy Agni contributes to healthy ojas.
The drug administered through Nose (Nasya) goes up to the brain and stimulate it’s function. In Ayurveda it is said that Nose is the gateway of head. In modern science it is given that the cell produce GnRH originates from olfactory area and GnRH acts as a regulator of gonadotropin hormone and all the orchestra of menstrual cycle is under the control of this gonadotropin which is secreted by pituitary gland. Pituitary gland is situated at the base of brain. Nasya helps to regulate hypothalamo/ hypothalamus – pituitary – ovarian axis and establishes the normal menstruation. Thus normal menstruation will lead easy to conception.
The important cause of infertility is the adoption of a modern lifestyle. Panchkarma treatment helps in the expulsion of toxins from the body.
