Tonsillitis, a common condition characterized by inflammation of the tonsils, may cause significant discomfort and interfere with day to day activities. While often considered a childhood ailment, tonsillitis can occur at any age and can be caused by various factors. Typically resulting from viral or bacterial infections. The condition can manifest in acute or chronic forms and is often accompanied by symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness of voice, halitosis, fever and swollen lymph nodes. Ayurveda offers natural and holistic remedies to ease symptoms and promote recovery.
Causes of Tonsillitis in Ayurveda
Tonsils are defined as the body’s first line of defense situated at the Oropharyngeal region of the mouth. Ayurveda also cites tonsils as a part of the immune system. Thus, a dip in immunity can cause them to become a source of recurrent infections.
Ayurvedic Solutions for Tonsillitis Relief:
- Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is revered in Ayurveda for its potent anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Consuming turmeric mixed with warm milk or water can help reduce inflammation.
- Haridra Khand provides anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, immune-modulatory effects and soothing effects on the throat. 1 tablespoon daily with the milk at night is helpful.
- Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) possesses strong anti-bacterial, antiviral and immune enhancing, made by boiling Tulsi leaves in water, and can provide relief from sore throat and inflammation associated with tonsillitis.
- Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) root is known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Gargling with licorice root tea or using it as a mouthwash can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the throat.
- Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) Powder 3 gm daily twice a day will boost the body’s defenses. Also, applying Guduchi powder with honey directly to the inflamed tonsils can help strengthen the immune response and reduce the severity of symptoms. Also it will help in removing the debris from the crypts of tonsils.
- Gandusha or Kavala (Oil pulling) involves swishing oil with sesame oil or gandusha with the decoction of Haridra plus Tankana bhasma. This practice helps remove toxins and bacteria from the oral cavity, including the throat area, and can help alleviate inflammation and discomfort associated with tonsillitis.
- Pratisarana involves the application of medicated pastes or powders directly to the inflamed tonsils to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain and combat infection. For Pratisarana; Triphala paste, Yashtimadhu paste / powder, Nimba powder, Haridra powder can be used.
Precautions for tonsillitis:
- Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after coughing.
- Avoid irritants: Minimize exposure to environmental pollutants, cigarette smoke and other respiratory irritants that can exacerbate throat inflammation.
- Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air, especially during dry weather or in heated indoor environments.
- Avoid cold and Dry foods, such as ice cream, cold beverages and chips are believed to aggravate tonsillitis.
