Monsoon is one of the favourite seasons for Indians as refreshing and soothing as it may feel after the warm summer days. But it also brings with them a host of diseases and infections that can cause a serious range of health and digestion issues. The bright side is that however staying healthy during this season is very easy by considering a few ayurvedic tips and implementing them in our daily life. Let’s know how we can stay safe and healthy in this beautiful season.
Why does the disease spread so faster in the rainy season?
Multiple viruses, bacteria and other infections spread two times higher and faster during the rainy season because of moisture in the air this microorganism can thrive and spread easily. Also, according to Ayurveda the Agni or digestive power is weak which also causes various problems related to digestion. Let’s learn about the prevention of this disease in detail
Air Borne Diseases:
Diseases like cold, cough and flu are very common in rainy season due to the moisture in the atmosphere and sudden fluctuation in temperature due to dust and allergens in the air. Sore throat, running nose, mild cough, and headache are the chief complaints seen. Rarely feverish feelings can also be seen. According to Ayurveda already Agni is manda and all the three doshas are vitiated in the rainy season where Vata leads to throwing away the stagnated and vitiated doshas and causes these symptoms.
How to Prevent this Infection:
- Sip lukewarm water throughout the day
- Try gargling with salt water two times a day
- Include Tulsi – “Queen of herbs” in our daily routine
- Honey along with ginger can be taken to clear the throat
- Taking golden milk or Haldi dhoodh infused with basic herbs like ginger, maricha etc
- Pratimarsha nasya that’s instilling 2 drops of anu tailam.
Mosquito borne diseases:
Monsoon is breeding season for mosquito due to stagant water. India bears a huge burden of mosquito born around 40 million people contract with such disease including malaria, dengue, and chikungunya etc. most common
Tips to Prevent:
- Garbage and stagnation of water must not be allowed near your home and surrounding areas as they are potential breeding grounds for mosquito.
- Growing plants like tulsi, lavender, lemon grass, mint, neem etc are helpful and act as a natural and effective mosquito repellent.
- Fumigating turmeric roots with neem leaves and adding Guggulu twice a day is also beneficial to getting rid of mosquitoes.
- The use of mosquito nets on windows and doors is also helpful in areas with outbreaks of such disease.
- Applying drops of neem oil with tea tree oil on the skin is also good for the skin and prevents mosquito bites.
Water-borne Diseases:
The Indian monsoon is characterized by unrelenting spells of rains, which unwittingly establishes contact between the groundwater and the sewage causing an undesirable buildup of germs and making a way for a host of ailments like typhoid, acute GI infection, hepatitis A, cholera etc.
How to Prevent
- Always boil the water with tulsi properly before drinking & having lukewarm water
- Avoid having food from streetside vendors
- Try to have hot food and fresh fruits and vegetables only after washing properly.
- Along with diseases, gastritis, and indigestion complaints are also very common in this season
- According to Ayurveda the Agni is manda in this season also the vitiated three doshas can cause abdominal heaviness, indigestion, gastritis etc.
- Avoid heavy and spicy food
- Take panchakola takram with meal
- Drink boiled water as it’s easy to digest and helps in digestion
- Avoid sleeping, hard work and sunlight during the day
- Vamana, virechana etc like sodhana procedures can be done to avoid disease due to vitiated doshas
