Introduction: Why Eye Care Can’t Wait?
The human eye is capable of differentiating over 10 million colors, detecting movements in milliseconds, and conveying the emotion without saying a single word. Yet, for many, vision loss begins not with trauma or disease, but with everyday habits.
We stares at screen, rub our eyes, skip our sleep, and ignore early signs of strain. This article dives into how these habits harm us and what we can do, drawing wisdom from both, modern medicine and ancient Ayurveda.
Ancient Wisdom- “Eyes Are Sacred”
Over a thousand years ago, Ayurveda emphasized the importance of eye protection:
द्वे पादमध्ये पृथुसन्निवेशे शिरे गते ते बहुधा च नेत्रे
ताम्रक्षणोद्वर्तनलेपनादीन् पादप्रयुक्तान्नयने नयन्ति ||
(अ.हृ.उ.16/66)
“In the middle of the feet, there are two large veins, which are connected to the eyes in many ways. Through these veins, the effects of procedures like Abhynga (oil massage), Ubtana (herbal scrub), and Alepa (application of paste) performed on the feet, reach the eyes.”
And further:
(अ.हृ.उ.13/18)
“One must protect the eyes as long as they wish to live. For the blind, the world loses meaning; day and night are the same, even amidst wealth.”
These Shlokas set the tone that, “Your eyes are precious and irreplaceable and so treat them that way.”
Harmful Habit 1: Excessive Screen Time
On Average, people now spend 7-10 hours daily on screens. This leads to:
- Digital Eye strain or Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)
- Blurred Vision
- Headaches
- Dry eyes
- Neck and Shoulder pain
Strategies to prevent:
- Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Adjust lighting: Use anti-glare screens and avoid bright lights behind your monitor.
- Keep a safe distance: Screens should always be at a distance of 20-28 inches from your eyes, slightly below to your eye level.
- Blink often: Screen use reduces blink rate. Consciously blink every few seconds.
- Use Triphala Eye wash: Soak Triphala in water overnight, strain, and wash eyes to reduce fatigue.
- Netra Aschyotana (Eyedrops): Instill 2-2 drops of Goghrita in both the eyes, at night.
- Palming: Rub your palms together and place gently over your eyes to relax eyes.
Harmful Habit 2: Rubbing or Touching Eyes Frequently
Rubbing your eyes may seem harmless- even comforting- especially when you’re tired or stressed. But this habit can cause serious and sometimes long-term damage.
Hidden Dangers:
- Chalazion, blocked oil gland in the eyelid, often caused by bacteria transferred from hands.
- Corneal Damage, constant rubbing can cause microscopic scratches or worsen existing irritation.
- Keratoconus, repeated trauma weakens the cornea, causing it to thin and bulge outward, severely distorting vision.
- Infection risk: Hands carry dirt, allergens, and microbes that can lead to conjunctivitis and styes too.
Strategies to prevent:
- Understand the trigger- Is it dryness, allergies or fatigue? And then consult an ophthalmologist to treat the root cause.
- Keep your hands clean, wash them regularly especially before touching your face.
- Avoid touching contact lens without washing hands.
- Try cold compression, gently place a clean, cold cloth over closed eyes to soothe itchiness or swelling. (Seek the advice of doctor)
- Stay alert!
Frequent eye rubbing could be a sign that you’re developing a refractive error. Don’t ignore the signal- get your eyes checked by a specialist.
Harmful Habit 3: Skipping Sleep
- Sleep is when your body and eyes recover and repair lack of sleep causes:
- Eye twitching, Dry eyes, Redness, Blurry vision, Puffy eyelids.
Strategies to prevent:
- Establish a sleep routine: Sleep and wake at the same time daily.
- Avoid screens 1 hour before bed to reduce blue light exposure.
- Keep your room dark and cool to support melatonin release.
- Drink warm milk with turmeric or nutmeg at night.
- Nasya therapy- Put herbal oils prescribed by expert in the nose daily in morning, helps balance sleep regulating hormones and nourishes the brain and eyes.
Harmful Habit 4: Ignoring Sun Protection
UV exposure is a major cause of cataracts and macular degeneration. The damage is cumulative and often goes unnoticed for years.
Strategies to prevent:
- Wear sunglasses that block 99-100% UVA and UVB rays.
- Use wide brimmed hats when out in the sun.
- Avoid looking directly at the sun (even during sunrise/sunset).
- Apply cow ghee on the eyelids for cooling and sun protection.
- Consume antioxidant rich foods- Amla (Indian gooseberry), leafy greens, carrots and pumpkin.
Harmful Habit 05: Skipping Eye Checkups
Many eye diseases like- Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular degeneration; progress without symptoms. Regular eye exams are essential for early detection.
Strategies to prevent:
- Visit an optometrist or ophthalmologist once a year.
- Monitor your family history- many conditions are hereditary. Follow medical advice for diabetes, blood pressure, or cholesterol.
- Regular eye washing with Triphala
- Apply castor oil around the eyes (not inside) to nourish skin and muscles.
- Use Rasayanas (rejuvenates) like Chyawanprash and Brahmi for systemic nourishment.
Preventive Eye Care Routine (Daily)
| Time | Activity | Modern Tip | Ayurvedic Tip |
| Morning | Eyewash | Splash with cold water | Use Triphala decoction with rose water |
| After Screen use | Eye Relaxation | 20-20-20 rule | Palming |
| Before Sleep | Nourishment and rest | Limit blue light, hydrate | Ghee massage, warm milk |
Final message: Vision is Your Window- Keep it clear
In the rush of life, it’s easy to forget how much we rely on our eyes- until something goes wrong.
चक्षूरक्षायां सर्वकालं मनुष्यैः यत्नः कर्तव्यो जीविते यावदिच्छा
“One must make effort to protect the eyes for as long as life is cherished.”
Sight is more than function- its connection, freedom, and quality of life.
Don’t blink and miss the warnings!!
Start small, stay consistent, and honor your vision- every single day.
