The Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), an initiative by CSIR and the Ministry of AYUSH, preserves and protects India’s traditional medicinal knowledge, including Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, and Siddha. It prevents the misappropriation of this knowledge by international patent offices, where traditional practices have been wrongfully patented.
TKDL systematically digitizes and documents medicinal plants, formulations, and ancient medical texts, making them accessible to patent examiners worldwide. This ensures that traditional knowledge is not falsely claimed as new innovations.
By safeguarding India’s intellectual property, TKDL helps prevent biopiracy and promotes global recognition of Indian traditional medicine. The initiative plays a vital role in preserving cultural heritage and ensuring ethical use of traditional medicinal knowledge.
