The Postpartum Phase I.e, time after child birth upto 40 days, in Ayurveda is referred to as Sutika Kala, which is a critical and transformative phase for a new mother. This period is characterized by a marked elevation of Vata Dosha, predominantly attributed to the sudden void in the uterine cavity following delivery, substantial loss of blood & fluids, disruption of sleep cycles and the intense exertion associated with labor and in severe cases may even lead to Postpartum Depression. This Vata dosha should be corrected with due importance or else it can lead to a range of complications to the mother including Chronic Fatigue, Anxiety, Dryness of tissues, Constipation, Inadequate lactation and potential long term degenerative disorders.
Even though these will be seen as complications to mother, its implication will be their even in the growth & development of the newborn in the longer run. Vata Dosha can be managed efficiently through classical regimens of Sutika Paricharya, individualized Ahara & Aushadha along with the support of the mind body interface that can be achieved through practices of Yoga, Meditation etc.
